David Goes Kiwi is a spinoff of my main blog, Raptitude.

My name is David Cain, and I’ve decided to ditch my job to go traveling.

The main destination is New Zealand, where I’ll spend the better part of a year, blogging all the while. On my way there I’ll spend ten days off the coast of British Columbia, including five days visiting friends and family in Victoria, and five days quieting my mind at Hollyhock.

After that, it’s off to Thailand for a few weeks, then I land in Auckland. There is no fixed itinerary, I’ll just go where the wind blows me, seeking recommendations from locals and other travelers. After some time I’ll certainly run out of money, settle in somewhere, and find a way to make money.

I have a number of reasons for doing this. As a lifelong introvert, it will force me out of my shell a bit, for one. With no friends or family for 10,000 miles I’ll have to be more resourceful and self-reliant.

As much as anything, I want to spend this next year improving my ability to relax and live in the moment. Staying present is the key to happiness, that I know. But it is a skill, and I’m going to take this chance to refine it.

Other than the fun and adventure of travel, this trip is a dramatic exercise in self-exploration. I’m not a seasoned traveler. I’m not especially outgoing, and I’m not terribly comfortable with uncertainty or financial pressure. Que sera sera.

I know I’ll have a blast, but it will also be a real test of character. I’m most interested in discovering who I’ll be when I get back.

I love the new slogan, and the david goes kiwi thing, its clever, and also I love kiwi.
Your adventure sounds super scary and exciting at the same time, I know you will have a great time and learn a lot, in moments like this, learning is inevitable.
So have fun, make the most of it! Ill be here, reading your updates :)

Hey Dave,

Regular reader here, and a resident of your main destination. I would be happy to give you tips on great places to see and interesting things to explore from the perspective of a life-long Kiwi while you’re in this lovely country. Also, the best places to get a good coffee, if you’ve returned to that indulgence :-)

Hi Mel. I would love it if you could give me some suggestions. Guidebook and fellow traveler suggestions are nice, but I think the best source would be NZ residents. It will be three weeks before I’m in New Zealand (I’m in Thailand right now) but I will be in touch. Thanks Mel.
